Cooking Healthy On A Low Income

Everyone knows that when on a budget, people tend to leave the healthy cooking aside and go for the cheaper foodstuff like Kraft dinner and pasta. With a family, this is not the ideal situation. How can you cook healthy when on a low income? Here are a few ideas to give you a head start.

Make A Garden

Having a garden can save you much money. Can or freeze the overstock, and you will have vegetables for a good part of the year. If you live in an apartment, grow some tomatoes in pots on your balcony. Make a fresh herb garden in little containers that you can keep indoors during the winter.

Buy In Season

Whenever possible, buy your fruits and vegetables while in season. They are a lot cheaper then. Again, can or freeze the overstock.

Shop At The End Of The Day

Do your grocery shopping at the end of the day, when stores are trying to get rid of products that are almost past their sell-by date. You will often find 50% rebates.

Buy Whole Chickens

Buy whole chickens or rotisserie chickens if you do not want the bother of cooking it. It is an inexpensive way to make many meals. Once you are done picking out the meat, use the bones to make chicken broth. With it, you can then make soup or any other meal you like.

Eat Less Meat

Try to eat less meat in general. It is the most expensive foodstuff of all. Compensate by eating more eggs or beans.

Buy Store Brands

Do not be afraid to buy store brands. They are as good as the brand names, at a fraction of the price.

Use Your Slow Cooker

Use your slow cooker whenever you can. Cheaper meat cuts will be tender and will taste great when cooked in it.

Buy Family Size Packs Of Meat

Family size packs of meat are usually less expensive than regular size. Break them down in smaller bags and freeze what you are not using right away. You can even buy a full cow or half or quarter cow from a local farmer. It is a significant amount of cash up-front but split the cost with friends or family members. You will get high-quality meat at half the price you would pay from a grocery store. An online personal loan could help you out if you do not have the cash at the time of the purchase. Make sure you have enough space in your freezer if you go with that option.

Stock Up During Sales

When you see amazing specials, stock up on that item. Freeze what you are not using.

Plan Ahead

Plan your meals ahead and according to the specials of the week. Make a grocery list and stick to it.

With these tips in mind, cooking healthy on a budget will be a piece of cake.
